Ladder stabilizer: for which professions ?

Do you need a high-performance ladder stabilizer for your work at height? Here are the professions for which this ProtecMi security equipment should be used to meet CNESST safety standards while working at height with a ladder.

The guys (and gals) in construction

On construction sites, whether you’re a roofer, carpenter, painter, electrician, bricklayer, or scaffolder, you often need to climb up and down ladders. These can even serve as workstations several meters above the ground! And when you have to work more than 3 meters above solid ground, the risk of injury is high. CNESST then requires that the ladder be securely anchored to the wall or roof by a ladder stabilizer or by another effective means. Both employers and workers are responsible for adhering to this safety rule, at the risk of facing a fine!

Falls during work at height result in thousands of injuries each year and also cause several deaths on construction sites. That’s why CNESST is so strict when it comes to securing ladders.

Window washers

Not all window washers work by moving smoothly in cherry pickers or platforms! Many use ladders, whether to reach second-story house windows or tall shop windows!

This profession is less glorified than that of saving lives during fires, but it is just as dangerous! That’s why this trade must also comply with CNESST standards. And the professional ladder stabilizer ensures the safety of window washers during work at height.

Jobs in high-altitude maintenance

Responsible for inspecting and repairing structures and equipment at height, this technician can be a plumber (who repairs ventilation equipment on rooftops), an electrician, a handyman, an aviation technician, etc. These jobs all have one thing in common: they are impossible to perform without a ladder, and a ladder stabilizer to ensure the safety of the workers.

CNESST and work at height

Regarding work at height with ladders on a construction site, the CNESST imposes safety measures that employees must adhere to when using ladders (under penalty of hefty fines):

  • The ladder must be leaned against a solid and level structure, and the foot must be immobilized using spreaders or anchored to a structure or stake planted in the ground.
  • The ladder must extend beyond the top support point by at least 35 inches and must be securely anchored with a ladder stabilizer or other method.
  • The top of the ladder should not rest against a gutter or roof edge.

Using an aluminum ladder stabilizer immobilizes the ladder and leaves a few inches of space between the ladder and the wall or roof edge.
